The security fencing and electronic gates are present because of the lake to abide by Pennsylvania law and liability, insurance requirments. There are villas on the grounds for professional tenants and retirees alike. It is a small, yet forested park with a fishing/swimming lake with low and high diving boards, row boats, center lake floating dock, flower gardens, vegetable garden, landscaped fields, walking trails, full functioning garage with high lift, air tools, and woodworking tools with paved roadways. An full service RV site is available as well. The local hospital is 7 miles from Lake Eron with the University of Pittsburgh Life Flight accessible hospital 45 minutes by car and less time by helicopter. The U.S. Air Force Civil Air Patrol as well as Boy Scout Troops are in the area for learning how to fly an airplane to tying a knot. The YMCA(Young Men?s Christian Association), coeducational physical fitness center is located within 5 miles of Lake Eron. Basketball, Soccer, American Football, Baseball, Cricket and water sports are all available at the universities, high schools or private, local facilities including indoor water programs for year round training. Lake Eron has been used by Olympic swimmers in training in the past. Why Lake Eron and not a student exchange program or a larger program at a university or major private school? o Safety - Lake Eron is in a country setting. Local public schools graduate, on average, 160 students per year. Small schools tend to have better safety records and far less of the "big city" influences. o Education - The public school is just that. An education program managed by the State of Pennsylvania not affiliated with a religious sect, political party or agenda and approved by an accrediting agency with full disclosure of their progress. Public school provides a more "real world" education versus a military school, or private school for those that have issues to solve in a highly structured environment. Every teen/student has issues to solve. We believe they are best solved in a small comunity environment and if professional assistance is needed it is then welcomed. Lake Eron is not affiliated with any church, religious group, political affiliation; part of a larger agenda or other limiting structure. Each student is free to follow their individual religious freedoms without interference from our staff. Although, Greensburg Central Catholic High school and Saint Vincent College and Seton Hill College are all private institutions with a Catholic basis, we have not found any undue pressure for students of the non-Catholic faith by the schools or their curriculum. o Home - We provide a home for your son. It is not a sterile environment. We offer jobs to students in various areas of park support. This is not a requirement, but, encouraged to earn spending money and/or the discipline of task completion. High School students are paid $6.00 per hour for work performed while college students are paid $8.00 per hour for more complex tasks. Students under age 18 do not operate machinery. All tasks are supervised. o Counseling - most schools, if not all, provide counseling in a variety of areas. We believe that with only 3 students maximum permitted we have the edge on dealing 1/1 with your son in problem solving and advising. We do not provide psychological counseling. We do provide guidance on issues that face the teen/student. We act on every request and tell the student up-front, that any issue that we deam critical or is required by law to report we follow the law and seek help. At the same time, your son is not abandon. We will follow through with the issue until advised otherwise by you, the parent, or a professional dealing with the issue. We anticipate issues. We understand the difficult nature of a teens/students life even beyond high school. Thus, college/university students have the same opportunities for counseling as do the high school students. o Home Sickness - We include your son in our daily activities. Holliday's, Vacation, Baseball, cookouts, camping, traveling by car, historic sites, museums, sports games, XBox, entertaining high school friends at the lake, school programs whether home or away; all these and more are part of your son's opportunity to experience the educational world and the cultural world of the USA. We even have a pinball machine, SkeeBall and hockey on ice. Really, we have ice skating and hockey on the lake. (The shallow end!) How do you know what really happens here at Lake Eron? Ask a former or current resident. An email or phone call. Pick one: English speaking is all of our former friends/students/residents. Spanish, French, Serbian, Papiamento, Dutch... pick a language and write or call our residents/former residents. Listen closely to them. They have confident voices, command of the English language, expanded vocabulary in English and their native language, a smile in their voice.
