Just in case you didn't see the posting a few days ago. Intern does not mean free labor to line your pocket with money!!! The knowledge of editing, CGI, graphics, and animation takes years of learning. If you are a company that is worth working for, you would be looking for interns the correct way, thru schools and technical training programs. Please be respectful and advertise your request as volunteer work, unless you are connected to an education organization.

As there are many offers for Internship placed here, I thought some information from the Department of Labor and the State of Texas would be helpful to both those looking for Internships and those offering internships. Please understand that there really is no such thing as an UN-PAID INTERNSHIP in most situations. Internships are still required to follow all State and Federal employment laws, including payment of minimum wage and other benefits. Please see the following information for 6 points that must ALL be met for an internship to be considered un-paid. Keep in mind that an intern is an official employment position and NOT free labor. If you are looking for free labor, then be real and ask for a volunteer.

State of Texas Requirements for Un-Paid Internships

Almost all posting for "internships" violate item number 4 in the statute above:

4. The employer that provides the training derives no immediate advantage from the activities of the trainees, and on occasion his operations may actually be impeded.

If you have participated in an internship that violated statute email twc.fraud@twc.state.tx.us or visit this web page: http://www.twc.state.tx.us/ui/bnfts/uifraud.html

My favorite is when people ask for an intern with a lot of expensive equipment, such as the many ads I have seen for an intern for a video production company that requires an HD camera. So, even a consumer HD camera runs at least $800 for something worth buying, but getting a Prosumer HD camera will run somewhere in the $3000-$8000 range and professional HD cameras run from $10,000 to $100,000 and more. So to expect someone to use their expensive equipment to help fill your pocket with money with and remuneration for themselves is ridiculous. Almost as ridiculous as someone planning a movie and asking for nearly every position to be an intern. Obviously, if everyone is an intern, then you have a great chance to learn from all the other people that don't know what they are doing.

DON'T POST SERVICE ADS IN THE GIG SECTION!!!

Craigslist asks you at least 2-3 times whether you are posting a service or offering to hire. You either aren't smart enough to read it correctly, or you don't care about rules and procedures of the companies you work with. Either way, it makes you someone that no one would want to work with.

To anyone else that likes to post your request for services, please keep it in the services section, and let craigslist serve it's purpose. I need an experienced reality show producer to help get my show off the ground. I have a treatment. I have a partial crew willing to shoot it once funded. Just need someone who knows the ins and outs. Who do I talk to at the networks? Which networks to talk with? Do I sell it to a network first? Do I go try and get the funding and shoot it first? Willing to pay well for a partner in this endeavor if all goes to plan.

We are a well known wedding video company in Austin, winning several awards for our work. We have a reasonably busy season coming up and are looking to bring on one person as an intern, or an assistant.

We handle our own shots for the most part, but in the beginning, it would mostly be grunt work, setting up jibs, balancing steadicams, setting up cameras and lighting. We use panasonic HMC150s and the new Canon 7ds for shooting. We do not require that you have a ton of experience, but we need someone who realizes that these are all day events (on Saturdays for the most part), it gets hot as hell, and you will be tired at the end of the day. Editing opportunities will also come up.

Again, not looking for free labor, but am interested in someone who needs experience in high pace media. We need someone that can commit to most of the current bookings that we have, not just one or two.

Thanks,

Ryan
