Ginger has a personality that is just like her Gilligan’s Island namesake, movie star! She is a sweet, playful seven year old kitty that can sometimes be a bit of a drama queen. Don’t let her age persuade you; she loves to play with her feather toy, and unlike rambunctious kittens, she will settle down in your lap afterward. She has a beautiful colored coat; it looks as if she was splattered with black and orange paint.

Ginger can be a bit shy at first, but will settle down quickly into her new home. She loves to be pet, but not picked up. She is a total lap cat. Ginger gets along well with other cats, but hasn't been around dogs before. She uses her litterbox like a perfect little lady. She has an allergy to fleas so she needs to stay indoors at all times and kept current on flea preventative. Ginger is a completely loyal cat, and prefers her humans to everyone else.

If you like cats who are playful but also loving, Ginger has it all, so welcome this movie star into your home!

Ginger is fostered through Austin Pets Alive!, a local non profit organization working to make Austin a no kill city. Her adoption fee is $125 and includes spay or neuter surgery, FeLV/FIV testing, first or more vaccinations, first or more deworming treatment, microchip and one month of pet insurance. She is healthy and happy and ready to find her forever home! Please e-mail for more information and with any questions.
Moving in with father-in-law who hates dogs. Having to part with my sweet, loving 5 month old female dachshund. Her name is Polly Anna. She is a cross between a short haired dachshund and a long haired, which makes her just so cute. She is current on shots, but has not been spayed yet, due to the fact that our vet says six months. I will have a lot of questions for anyone wanting to offer her a home, so please be prepared to tell me about yourself and provide vet references. She will not be used for breeding, so if that is what you want her for, you can just forget it. We are asking $100 re-homing fee for her, $50 of which is refundable once you provide me proof of spay at 6 months. Serious inquires only. Thank you!

Big Beautiful two year old male cat looking for a forever home. Greyson was a neighborhood cat that I fed outside for a year before I moved 6 months ago and of course I had to move him with me.....he gets along with all of my other cats except for my older female who is super afraid of him. He's adapted well to being an inside only cat and he has a loving sweet personality...... he 's also playful and snuggles with me at night. He's neutered so either he was orginally lost or purposely left behind. There is an adoption fee of $35 which will be donated to the Catsjazz organization that helps to find homes for rescue cats.

I am needing to find my dog hank a new home. He is almost two years old and 65 pounds of a mix of border collie and german shepard (atleast that's what we were told). He's great with kids and knows his basic commands. He does still acts very much like a puppy (don't leave socks or underwear where he can get to it). Not the best pic of him but it was all I could do at the moment. We are asking a rehoming fee of $ 25 to ensure he goes to a good home. If you have any questions feel free to ask. Thanks!

I have two beautiful, female, talkative Macaw parrots. One is a blue/gold and the other one is a green wing. They are each around 13 years old. Due to working two jobs and not having the time to spend with them I have decide that rehome is in their best interest. They both love to be out of the cage and with you and I'm not able at this time to do that. They are highly intelligent and each come with a large cage, toys, books, and a playscape. They can be rehomed together or separate. Because of large size, experienced bird handlers only will be considered. What a great and unique Christmas present! A Letter from a Shelter Manager in Odessa
I think our society needs a huge "Wake-up" call. As a shelter manager, I am going to share a little insight with you all...a view from the inside if you will.

First off, all of you breeders/sellers should be made to work in the "back" of an animal shelter for just one day. Maybe if you saw the life drain from a few sad, lost, confused eyes, you would change your mind about breeding and selling to people you don't even know.

That puppy you just sold will most likely end up in my shelter when it's not a cute little puppy anymore. So how would you feel if you knew that there's about a 90% chance that dog will never walk out of the shelter it is going to be dumped at? Purebred or not! About 50% of all of the dogs that are "owner surrenders" or "strays", that come into my shelter are purebred dogs.

The most common excuses I hear are; "We are moving and we can't take our dog (or cat)." Really? Where are you moving too that doesn't allow pets? Or they say "The dog got bigger than we thought it would". How big did you think a German Shepherd would get? "We don't have time for her". Really? I work a 10-12 hour day and still have time for my 6 dogs! "She's tearing up our yard". How about making her a part of your family? They always tell me "We just don't want to have to stress about finding a place for her we know she'll get adopted, she's a good dog".

Odds are your pet won't get adopted & how stressful do you think being in a shelter is? Well, let me tell you, your pet has 72 hours to find a new family from the moment you drop it off. Sometimes a little longer if the shelter isn't full and your dog manages to stay completely healthy. If it sniffles, it dies. Your pet will be confined to a small run/kennel in a room with about 25 other barking or crying animals. It will have to relieve itself where it eats and sleeps. It will be depressed and it will cry constantly for the family that abandoned it. If your pet is lucky, I will have enough volunteers in that day to take him/her for a walk. If I don't, your pet won't get any attention besides having a bowl of food slid under the kennel door and the waste sprayed out of its pen with a high-powered hose. If your dog is big, black or any of the "Bully" breeds (pit bull, rottie, mastiff, etc) it was pretty much dead when you walked it through the front door.

Those dogs just don't get adopted. It doesn't matter how 'sweet' or 'well behaved' they are.

If your dog doesn't get adopted within its 72 hours and the shelter is full, it will be destroyed. If the shelter isn't full and your dog is good enough, and of a desirable enough breed it may get a stay of execution, but not for long . Most dogs get very kennel protective after about a week and are destroyed for showing aggression. Even the sweetest dogs will turn in this environment. If your pet makes it over all of those hurdles chances are it will get kennel cough or an upper respiratory infection and will be destroyed because shelters just don't have the funds to pay for even a $100 treatment.

Here's a little euthanasia 101 for those of you that have never witnessed a perfectly healthy, scared animal being "put-down".

First, your pet will be taken from its kennel on a leash. They always look like they think they are going for a walk happy, wagging their tails. Until they get to "The Room", every one of them freaks out and puts on the brakes when we get to the door. It must smell like death or they can feel the sad souls that are left in there, it's strange, but it happens with every one of them. Your dog or cat will be restrained, held down by 1 or 2 vet techs depending on the size and how freaked out they are. Then a euthanasia tech or a vet will start the process. They will find a vein in the front leg and inject a lethal dose of the "pink stuff". Hopefully your pet doesn't panic from being restrained and jerk. I've seen the needles tear out of a leg and been covered with the resulting blood and been deafened by the yelps and screams. They all don't just "go to sleep", sometimes they spasm for a while, gasp for air and defecate on themselves.

When it all ends, your pets corpse will be stacked like firewood in a large freezer in the back with all of the other animals that were killed waiting to be picked up like garbage. What happens next? Cremated? Taken to the dump? Rendered into pet food? You'll never know and it probably won't even cross your mind. It was just an animal and you can always buy another one, right?

I hope that those of you that have read this are bawling your eyes out and can't get the pictures out of your head I deal with everyday on the way home from work.

I hate my job, I hate that it exists & I hate that it will always be there unless you people make some changes and realize that the lives you are affecting go much farther than the pets you dump at a shelter.

Between 9 and 11 MILLION animals die every year in shelters and only you can stop it. I do my best to save every life I can but rescues are always full, and there are more animals coming in everyday than there are homes.

My point to all of this DON'T BREED OR BUY WHILE SHELTER PETS DIE!

Hate me if you want to. The truth hurts and reality is what it is. I just hope I maybe changed one persons mind about breeding their dog, taking their loving pet to a shelter, or buying a dog. I hope that someone will walk into my shelter and say "I saw this and it made me want to adopt". THAT WOULD MAKE IT WORTH IT

For those of you that care--- please repost this to at least one other craiglist in another city/state. Let's see if we can get this all around the US and have an impact
I have a 9 to 12 month old female. She is a sweet heart and would do great in a one dog family or ones that can feed her separate from other dogs. She is food aggressive with other dogs but have never gotten into a fight about it She loves females dog but will need time to get use to males. She is pure but I got her as a pet and she will not come with papers. She loves to play and loves treats and loves to jumps around waiting for her food. She is very out going at times but knows when to chill. She is still more puppyish and likes to play nibble and all that although she doesn't chew on anything. She is kennel trained and she is house trained if you let her out even 5 hours or so. She is all white with a cow tummy. She loves to go to Red Bud. She loves adults but is iffy with children until she is shown that its alright. She is a Mini so she doesn't weight much. Email me if interested I am going to ask questions and be picky about where she goes to as I am in no hurry to get rid of her. Email me if interested. There is a re-homing fee but we can talk about that when you email me.

We took him to the vet who told us there was no such thing as a teacup yorkie and the tiny ones are simply inbred to make them smaller and smaller. With that comes HUGE health issues. The first month that we had him we had to spend over $1,800.00 in vet bills just to keep him alive. They recommended that we immediately “fix” him because if not, he would just pass the health problems on. In the 5 years that we have had him, he has had ongoing health issues, as the vet TOLD us he would. Just last month we spent $1,200.00 on his teeth. He is also pre-arthritic and needs surgery on his knees soon. I'm not saying that I think you can't afford it, but the vet bills for my little bottom of the gene pool inbred puppy are astronomical. I love my baby and intend to keep paying out the nose for his health, but if I didn’t have the money he might have ended up in a shelter.

Looking for Teacup Yorkie less than 1yr. It will be going to a great home with lots of love and care. I have wanted for a very long time but can't seem to find one reasonably priced. I would much rather rescue a dog than pay for one. I feel as though animals should not be sold to the highest bidder but adopted out to the best home. If anyone has a Yorkie that needs a new home email me back please. :)

Location: Austin
it's NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other commercial interests

PostingID: 1617997273

Our purpose is to provide a loving foster home and quality food, medical attention, and behavioral training while they are in our care in order to properly evaluate and attend to each dog’s special needs. Our ultimate goal is to place each foster dog in a forever home with a family who has demonstrated their ability to provide the necessary love, attention, and care that every gentle giant deserves. Every "animal lover" has his/her own idea on proper animal welfare, whether it be politically, ethically, or emotionally driven. I think we should work on the source of the problem instead of arguing about who's doing an insufficient job and who's intervening.

Whether or not you volunteering with shelters/rescues, or holding protest signs in front of Pet Land, if you have any compassion towards these innocent animals you would know how serious the situation is.We can have the best adoption program in the nation and keep alive/rehome as many animals as we can but, unless we get into the communities and change the way we behave as a whole instead of trying to change the outcome, it will be a vicious cycle.

It is amazing how knowledgeable and progressive animal advocates in Austin are on topics of overpopulation and killing in shelters and programs to reduce it. However the general public does not have a good understanding of spaying/neutering, lowcost programs, feral cat programs, microchipping, Pet Land/puppy mills, backyard breeders, etc. The only way to get the message to the people that there are these programs available and that there is an issue behind buying a pet is to TELL them about it. Your friends, neighbors, acquaintances, and community will listen to you before they listen to anybody behind a desk or in a uniform. Think of how many pets (including unborn) that you can be saving by bringing a little enlightenment into the community.

BOTTOM LINE: EDUCATE EDUCATE EDUCATE

Next time you have the opportunity to share your knowledge please do!

A Letter from a Shelter Manager (US)

A Letter from a Shelter Manager

Our orange Tabby Cat has been missing since Monday, March 15, 2010. His name is Snickers. He is an orange & white tabby. He weighs 12 lbs and is 12 years old. He was wearing a black break away collar with a Longhorn name tag. He is a skittish cat and probably will not be approachable. He rarely leaves the yard and we are afraid he may be hurt or injured and hiding out somewhere. Please call (512) 795-8862 if you can help us. Thanks

Hi there! I'm Cody, a tan, fuzzy lab mix pup just waiting to share my love of life! I was going to be put to sleep because I have a skin infection (mange) and they couldn't treat me at the shelter. BUT the great people at APA! recognized that with an easy dose of medicine I would be fine in a few weeks and I'm doing great now!

I love to play all day and once I wear myself out, I just nap, nap, nap. I'm also very affectionate and love to give my foster mommy lots and lots of kisses! I am playful and happy and can't wait to have a family to call my very own! Who can resist this sweet face?! Won't you come and meet me today?

I was taken off of the euthanasia list, so if you adopt me, you are saving not only me but also the dog tomorrow who could use my spot!

To find out where I will be, please check this link:
http://www.austinpetsalive.org/events/daily-dog-locations/

Or send an email to adopt@austinpetsalive.org to learn more (APA! volunteers respond to emails as quickly as possible, usually within 24 hours).

And check out APA!’s other available dogs:
http://www.austinpetsalive.org/adopt/dogs/
My name is Angel, I am a 11 month old blue heeler mix. I know I don't look like it, but I am, I met my mom. I am a beautiful, friendly girl just looking for someone who has more time to spend with me. I need a yard to roam in as I have lots of energy. I love other dogs and I love people, don't mind cats either! I might not be too good with little kids, just because I am a bit hyper. My parents are asking a small rehoming fee of $25, to make sure that I am going to someone that will take good care of me. If you are looking for a friendly girl, then look no further, you have found me!

Hey, I'm Cash. I'm a Pit Bull Terrier mix. Here is what one of the APA! Adoption Counselors has to say about me:

Cash is just a huge goofball. He's like a giant dork, and I know that sounds silly, but it's true. He lounges around and just loves to lean on you and be near you. He has no idea how big and burly he has grown. He still thinks he's a tiny puppy, I think. He will absolutely crawl into your lap to cuddle. Typically at inappropriate times, like when you're driving or trying to do paperwork... Cash absolutely adores people. He will do anything that you ask.

Cash is one of the most handsome dogs that I have ever met. He is simply striking, especially when you get to know him. He's just a really nice guy. He's the kind of dog that you expect to start speaking English one day. He looks at you and you can just tell that he's trying to work the situation out in his head. He's a very special boy.

Meet me, Charlie! I'm a Miniature Pinscher mix. I am a "senior citizen" pup who is one of the cuddliest dogs you'll ever meet! My favorite "activity" is to curl up right next to you on a sofa or comfy chair while you relax. A few times throughout the day, I have bursts of energy, and I jump around, ready to play. But I get tired out pretty quickly, so long walks or runs are not my thing. Short strolls are more my preference.

When I was rescued, I had pretty bad hairloss due to ringworm. I am still taking medicine, but my hairloss seems to be improving. I have also gained a little weight and strength in the past few weeks. Even at 12 years old, I still have a lot of love to give and I'm quite a handsome, charming little guy!

Hello...my name is Miracle and I'm a lab mix! My foster mom keeps telling me my name fits me because she is so amazed by me. Here is the deal...I can't really see. I have one eye that never opened and my other eye is very cloudy, almost white. I can see shadows though, sort of. My foster mom is amazed at how well I can hear noises, voices, etc. and make my way around everywhere based on what I hear and what I can smell. I do not let my vision slow me down. I am happy chasing the other dogs in the house around, chasing my foster parents feet, and also exploring the house. My favorite past time is snuggling and giving kisses. I feel super safe and secure in my foster's arms and laps and truth be told, I am the most happiest when we are snuggling. I am learning the pottying thing outside and I keep hearing "Good girl Miracle" so I must be doing good at it. I will do well with a family that has a desire to take me to some special training as well as to be patient with me and spend some extra time just loving me. Would you like to cuddle with me?

I was taken off of the euthanasia list, so if you adopt me, you are saving not only me but also the dog tomorrow who could use my spot!

To find out where I will be, please check this link:
http://www.austinpetsalive.org/events/daily-dog-locations/

Or send an email to adopt@austinpetsalive.org to learn more (APA! volunteers respond to emails as quickly as possible, usually within 24 hours).

And check out APA!’s other available dogs:
http://www.austinpetsalive.org/adopt/dogs/
Hi, I'm Annie Oakley! Even though I'm a young adult, I have the boundless enthusiasm of a puppy. You name it, I think it's GREAT: walks, people, other dogs, treats, new and interesting places.

A stately labrador retriever mix, I have the best qualities of a lab, plus the special bonuses of a "mix" - a glossy, sleek black coat, chocolate brown eyes, a long refined face, and a tall, lean body. I even have distinctive white markings on my chest and feet.

I am delighted when I can take walks and chase balls (I'm still working on the part where I bring them back to you), and I would be a fantastic running buddy. I am smart and curious about everything, and want to always be where the action (and attention) is! What more could you ask from a companion?

It seems like I am making up for lost time. I did not receive much love or kind attention during the first year or so of my life, so now I eat it up! I love to snuggle and love, and when you love me in return, I will reward you with adoring looks from those big, brown eyes!

The ideal home for me would have a yard, and contain adults and/or older children (my enthusiasm during playtime might be a bit much for small kids) - anyone who can give me lots of love and attention too, and be loved in return. Oh, and no cats or other dogs, please! I want to be your one and only!

In order to really get to know me, watch the most amazing video of me in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkDZRS_FtjQ

Hi there, I'm Wilbur! I'm a Pit Bull Terrier mix. I didn't have the easiest start in life. I spent a good portion of my early life shut into a small run area, frequently without any food or water.

By the time I came to APA!, I was emaciated with my ribs showing through. Now in an APA! volunteer foster home, I am receiving the care and nurturing that I never knew before and my personality is starting to shine through!

I am an active boy, and instinctively knew exactly what a tennis ball was for. I act like a mountain goat sometimes - wanting to climb up on things, mostly trying to get as close to you as possible. If you sit down I will turn around so I can get as close to you as possible and lean into you.

I'm a sweet and gentle boy! Can you show me what it is to have a loving home in return for my grateful devotion?

I was taken off of the euthanasia list, so if you adopt me, you are saving not only me but also the dog tomorrow who could use my spot!

To find out where I will be, please check this link:
http://www.austinpetsalive.org/events/daily-dog-locations/

Or send an email to adopt@austinpetsalive.org to learn more (APA! volunteers respond to emails as quickly as possible, usually within 24 hours).

And check out APA!’s other available dogs:
http://www.austinpetsalive.org/adopt/dogs/
