My sister hired a painter/contractor from Craiglist whom she wrote a check, and the person cashed the check and never came back for the job, although she kept his tool box and sold it on Craigslist. She was smart to write a check because at first he wanted cash. But with the next person she hired, she got references and made sure to check that the contractor was licensed with the state. Regardless of who you end up hiring, DO your homework on the person. She got the new contractor to sign a written agreement, and got a copy of his I.D., this way whatever work he did on her house, if there was anything shady going on, it's all in writing. I've taken many trips with people from rideshare and had great experiences, but I always met them for an interview, and we both checked references on eachother. You will be getting in a car with a complete stranger... If you get lucky, and the driver is not a Junkie or a sexual deviant, you still run the risk of serious injury when this person, driving a car that is not safe (Think about it... The have no money to repair and maintain their vehicle. If they had any money, would they be here playing taxi driver in order to make some spare change?) plows into a telephone pole or a mini van full of innocent kids. Then, to ice that cake, you would not be able to file a claim against their insurance (That is, if they have valid insurance, remember, they have no money to pay for insurance) because since it is 100% ILLEGAL to transport passengers for a fee without being authorized to do so, their insurance company does NOT have to pay out damages incurred while their client is engaged in any illegal activity. So, all your medical bills, legal expenses, lost wages, etc will be coming out of YOUR pocket, not out of an insurance claim! There is a special commercial policy required by law to transport passengers for a fee, which since these gypsy craigslist wanna-be taxi drivers are not a real, tax paying commercial entity, they do not possess. And of course, suing the driver for damages is useless, one reason is since they are broke, and probably don't have any assets besides their now wrecked automobile, there is nothing to recover.
