Support for disabled children on Bali Island
July 24 - August 7, 2010

Bali Island is a densely populated island, with population more that 3 million people all together. The population is almost all Indonesian, 95% are of Balinese Hindu descent and could be describe as ethic Balinese. Bali is also a tiny, extremely fertile and dramatically mountainous island. It is only 140 km by 80 km. The tourism boom, which started in 1970s has brought many changes and has helped pay for improvement in roads, telecommunication, education and health. Though tourism has had some marked effects, Bali’s unique culture and custom has proved to be remarkably island. Bali disabled School was founded with the aim to cater for the needs of disabled children and youth in Bali and the surrounding areas. Moreover, this school is also aimed to encourage and motivate the disable children and youth to struggle for their future. We would like to host foreign volunteers because we believe that their interaction with the children, during education and vocational classes and other therapeutic activities will be of great benefit as our students have little or no chances to meet and live with people from other cultures. The intercultural dimension that their presence will generate will also be welcomed and valued by the local staffs. The support that the volunteers will give to our teaching staff, particularly those teaching English, will be invaluable.
The role of the volunteers will be assisting local teacher in classes like teaching basic conversation in English, helping teacher in giving training on physical activities of the disabled students like making simple handicrafts, playing, doing simple sport etc . Volunteers' influence on students is expected to create a sense of knowledge of other realities of the disabled kids and other cultures in a way that improves their own perception of themselves and what they can achieve. Also to open the mind of international volunteers that the disabled students also need attention to face their future. It will also give opportunity for the international volunteers about the treatment that should be done by the families of disabled children.

For more details about this projects, please visit : www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-indonesia.htm or give us a call:
 617-502-0400

 604-628-7400

Children's Hospital Boston Research Study

We are a group of doctors and researchers from the Developmental Medicine Center, the Division of Genetics, the Department of Neurology, and the Program in Genomics at Children's Hospital Boston. Together we are working towards gaining an enhanced understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and other related disorders. We collaborate with other health professionals locally, nationally, and internationally to achieve insight into these complex disorders. A number of sources fund our efforts, including the Simons Foundation, the Autism Consortium of Boston, and the National Institute of Mental Health.

We are studying ASD and related disorders in order to better understand why they occur, increase our ability for early identification, and find improved treatments. In our study we look at information such as medical history, current symptoms, and genetic make-up. While we are gathering and analyzing information to answer questions about ASD, we also hope to develop training and teaching tools for those who work with children and their families affected by these disorders.

With the number of children diagnosed with ASD progressively rising, now is the time to explore the causes and seek better treatment. We need to raise awareness of these disorders and improve services and options for individuals and families impacted by ASD. We depend on families like yours to make this happen!
Cappella CLAUSURA is an ensemble of sopranos, altos, and early music instruments in Boston whose goal is to research and bring to light works written by women from the 8th century to the present day. Our intention is to dispel the notion that there are not now nor have there ever been gifted women composers. While we perform music by all women composers, and champion living composers, we concentrate on repertoire by women in the cloister, or in clausura, during the Italian baroque period because it was an extraordinary time when women were allowed, by fluke of historical personalities and fashion, to express themselves spiritually and artistically, and most importantly, to be published. History has been blind and deaf to these remarkable works; Cappella Clausura brings vision and voice to them. http://clausura.org/

The landscape here is majestic, with fjord after fjord, towering above shore and sea, each and every fjord has its own distinctive character and tiny fishing villages nestle at their foot. It is an ideal place for hikers and all nature lovers, in summer and winter alike. Seals bask on the rocks, huge colonies of seabirds are seen and the king of the skies, the white-tailed eagle may be watching over.
The project will mainly take place in Nupur which used to be a boarding school in the past but now it is a hotel and a University. The cozy school buildings are surrounded by beautiful mountains with a view over the Alps of Westfjords and the blue seas of Dyrafjordur.
The area around Nupur is ideal to get to know the Icelandic nature. You can take a walk to Skrudur, the oldest botanic gardens in Iceland or hike in the mountains. The area has a great variety of birds and footpaths for those who are interested in Icelandic wild life.
The purpose of this project is to improve the skills of the participants to capture their memories in an unforgettable way. We will learn how to think about landscape photography from capture to finished image, your ability to create dramatic compositions will become more effortless and you'll learn about what might be holding you back from reaching your full potential as a photographer. We will also make some videos during those two weeks.
In this project, you'll learn how to better express your vision and how to digitally optimize your images in such a way that anyone who views it will be attracted to the same qualities that drew you into the scene. We will work with different themes from day to day and every evening we will watch the photos together to evaluate the work. In the end of the project, we will put up an exhibition in a public place. The project will be leaded by an experienced photographer.

I'm Rob
McCarthy and am running for U.S. Congress in the 6th Congressional District of
Massachusetts. The communities in the 6th District are listed below, but
most are in Essex County and some in Middlesex County.

I'm asking
volunteers to stand outside supermarkets and post offices and ask people to sign
my nomination papers. It is easy to do, but does require stepping outside the
"comfort zone" for some.

For those
who would feel more comfortable, simple ask your family, friends and relatives
to sign the nomination papers.

Either way
your help would be greatly appreciated, valued and you will be helping to
continue the tradition of our democratic process. We'll let you know what to say
and where to stand.

Please
respond to this Craigslist posting to volunteer or to request more information.
We'll get right back to you.

Project Bread - The Walk for Hunger
Sunday, May 2, 2010

Project Bread’s annual Walk for Hunger is Sunday, May 2, 2010. Join over 40,000 Walkers and 2,000 Volunteers and be part of the effort to end hunger for the 554,000 people in Massachusetts who struggle to put food on the table!

Since 1969, friends, families, and coworkers have been coming together united in one purpose: to provide nourishment for those who are struggling to put food on the table. Each year, 4,000 companies, schools, religious groups, community groups, and friends and family groups step out and raise $3.8 million for the Walk. And this year, we ask no less. The need is as great as we’ve ever seen it.

Encourage those you know to join with you in this commitment on the first Sunday in May. You can walk all 20 miles or just part of the route. Shuttle buses are available at each checkpoint to bring you back to the Common. Walk with classmates, coworkers, your religious group, friends, or family!

Volunteers are also needed to hand out snacks, water, and more. It's a great family activity, so bring the kids, wear your free volunteer T-shirts, and teach your children about giving back. Bring a group, or come by yourself and meet new people who care about helping others. Volunteer for a morning or afternoon shift, or stay all day — we’ve never needed you more.

Whether you are beginning or continuing your commitment to helping hungry people, there is something for everyone! Learn more and register online at www.projectbread.org/walk. You can also email volunteer@projectbread.org or call our volunteer hotline at 617-239-2546.

Discovery Studios is producing a new documentary style series which will air on TLC. It is setting out to help families whose lives have been disrupted by chronic disorganization and compulsive hoarding. We’re looking for people who are willing to share their stories on camera and want to get professional help to organize their clutter and change their lives.
Sadly there are very few animals in the area due to illegal game hunting and poaching. It is located 170 km East of Lusaka.
The community is very small and yet has many orphans. Many parents have been killed by HIV or malaria, other could not get proper health care. The community came together and founded the Blessed Hope orphanage. It is run by members of the community and it has gotten some funds from the Government. However, these funds are not enough to enable them to complete the construction of the orphanage.
The volunteers will continue the construction of the dormitory for the children that was started last year. Apart from the group leader, we will have an environmental messenger, a person dedicated to organising and developing fun, interactive and educational activities within the project.
Special requirements: Volunteers participating in this project should not be afraid of the sea as transport by boat will be regular; previous experience is an asset but not a requirement.
Projectl anguage: English
Leisure time: Outdoor activities such as hikes in the area will be arranged free of charge for the volunteers.
Accommodation: The volunteers will stay at the location, and will take turns between sleeping inside a house and in tents outside the house. Equipped kitchen is available.
Location: The lighthouse is located in the West Fjords, one of the most breathtaking and beautiful areas in the country, which is at the same time the least visited and most remote area of Iceland.

It is mainly funded by the Central Java department of health and closely cooperates with the statutory health services and the Faculty of Medicine of the Diponegoro University. The support that the volunteers will give to our teaching staff , particularly those teaching English, will be invaluable.
The role of the volunteers will be assisting local teacher in classes like teaching basic conversation in English, helping teacher in giving training on physical activities of the disabled students like making simple handicrafts, playing, doing simple sport etc. The volunteers' influence on students is expected to create a sense of knowledge of other realities of the disabled kids and other cultures in a way that improves their own perception of themselves and what they can achieve. Also to open the mind of international volunteers that the disabled students also need attention to face their future. Well... I'm shamelessly looking for help here.

We're renovating a bathroom and kitchen in a small condo and guess what... it's expensive!! so we're trying to do as much of it ourselves as we can. Problem is, we're total newbies.

So yeah, we're looking for someone who might be willing to come by and help out, show us the ropes. I know this is a long shot but hey -- it's the volunteer section -- people who like to do nice things for people!

Also if you're looking for a barter situation, send a note and let me know what you're thinking.
