It has a lot to do with the whole development of the slave trade, eugenics, white American's appropriating Christianity a white religion, and so on. Therefore, black Americans created their own counter-culture. Please don't call it African American culture as that is an insult to black Americans. I am not black or white, but I respect the culture born out of, say, the Harlem Renaissance. So, please make sure you know what it is you're asking for.
